
This trek from Lachen to Green Lake at the base of Mt. Khangchendzonga in Zemu glacier in North Sikkim, is excellent for the close - up views of the Mt. Siniolchu, and Mt. Simvo. The views of the mountain peaks of the Northern ranges of Khangchendzonga from Green Lake are spectacular. It”s a high altitude expedition trek and one needs to be physically very fit to undertake the trek. The best time to trek is from April to November. In this trek the route to Green lake is the usual one followed by most trekkers, but on the way back we take a different route to end the trek at Chopta valley. Time permitting you will also go to the high altitude Gurudongmar lake.
Day 1: Pick up at Bagdogra.
Drive to Gangtok (1,547m) Overnight hotel.
Day 2: Sightseeing of Gangtok and Rumtek Monastery. Overnight at hotel.
Day 3: Drive to Lachen in north Sikkim (2728 M). Lodge or Tent.Day 4: Start Trek to Talem (3120 M). (12 kms/ 5-6 hrs)We start the day walking towards Zema. At Zema there is confluence of Zemu Chu and Thangu Chu. After crossing a bridge the trail turns towards the west to follow the left bank of the Zemu Chu to Green Lake. The trail for the first 6 kms is wide and broad . Some times the route is hampered with landslides. After a further 6 kms we reach Tallem, at the confluence of Lhonak Chu with Zemu Chu. Overnight stay in tents.
Day 5: Trek to Jakthang (3240 M). (12 kms/ 5-6 hrs)The trail enters some of the most magnificent forest areas for which Sikkim is famous. Cross a bridge to climb steadly through forest to Shobuk. The trail then descends steeply for 12 kms to Jakthang, a small clearing in the forest. Overnight stay in tents.
Day 6: Trek to Yabuk (3810 M). (8 kms/ 4-5 hrs)The trail continues through forest on this day. After a short climb it crosses a bridge over Thombak Chu. There are several ascents and descends on the route, and is often wiped out of floods. Later we descend towards the bank of the Zemu Chu and follow the trail beside the river. After a tiring 8 kms day walk we reach the camping ground of Yabuk. Yabuk is a small but beautiful camping area very cold and windy near the glacier. Overnight in tents.
Day 7: Trek to Rest Camp (4500 M). (8 kms/ 3-4 hrs)From Yabuk the trail enters the moraine field of the Zemu Glacier, crossing boulders and pebbles. It is a tiring route with increasing altitude and is like a walk in high altitude desert; though later one is rewarded with magnificent views of mountain peaks like Siniolchu and Simvo. At times one can also view Kangchenjunga rising in the distance. After a 6 kms walk we reach Rest camp at the mouth of Lhonak valley. Overnight stay in tents.
Day 8: Trek to Green Lake (4934 M). (6 kms/ 3-4 hrs) The trail from Rest camp towards the Green Lake is along similar terrain along a moraine ridge. The views of the surrounding peaks are very clear. Finally we reach Green lake camp which is a vast open ground. Overnight Stay in Tents.
Day 9: Exploration day hike to Zemu Glacier (5600m). Tent.Day 10: Trek back to Rest Camp. Tent.Day 11: Trek to Thieulacha (5200m). Tent. - 11 kms uphill trek/6-8hrs. We trek north east to go to Thieulacha. It is an uncommon route as everyone treks back the same way they go. On this route one gets to see the magnificent views of Lama Angden peak and the valleys of Muguthang and Lonak.
Day 12: Theulacha to Langbo (Lonak la) via Muguthang (5000+ M). Tent. - 11 kms/6-8hrsDay 13: Lonak to Thangu via Chopta (3920m). Tent. - 12 kms/8-9hrs trek upto Chopta.
From here the vehicle can pick the group up and take you to Thangu. Stay at Thangu.
Day 14: Visit Gurudongmar Lake. 2hrs from Thangu. Drive to Lachen and stay overnight.
Day 15: Drive to Gangtok. 6hrs. Day 16: Drop to NJP/ IXB.Cost: On Request. Please
