THE KAMENG RIVER EXPEDITION
The Kameng River (previously named Bhareli River, now called Kameng in Arunachal Pradesh and Jia Bhoreli in Assam) in the eastern Himalayan mountains, originates in Tawang district from the glacial lake below snow capped Gori Chen mountain (6,300 metres (20,669 ft) on the India-Tibet border in South Tibet and flows through Bhalukpong circle of West Kameng District, Arunachal Pradesh and Sonitpur District of Assam, India. It is one of the major tributaries of the Brahmaputra River, joining it at Tezpur, just east of the Kolia Bhomora bridge. The Kameng forms the boundary between East Kameng District and West Kameng Districts and is also the boundary between the Sessa and Eaglenest sanctuaries to its west and the Pakke tiger reserve to the east. The Dafla Hills are east and the Aka Hills (home of Aka tribe) are west of the Kameng River. Adding to the trilogy of our offerings on the Upper Brahmaputra, Subansari and Lohit rivers, the Kameng is a fascinating medium-large volume river trip with surprisingly consistent rapids, deep gorges, pristine camps and well kept old forests.
Raftable period: Nov, Dec; Trip can be customised for a min group of 8 pax
Itinerary
Day 01: Meet at domestic airport at New Delhi. Early morning flight from Delhi to Guhawati. Upon arrival, transfer into waiting vehicles and drive 5 hours to Tezpur. Overnight in Hotel.
Day 02: Drive from Tezpur to Seppa (6 hours - 213km). Seppa (formerly known as Salpa) is the headquarters of the East Kameng district in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in India. Sapla means 'marshy' land in the local dialect. It lies on the bank of Kameng River. Overnight Guest House.
Day 03: Drive Seppa to Marjangle (4 hours - 60 km). We load up our crafts for a fully self contained expedition down the mighty Kameng. Paddle a short section and set up Camp for the night.
Day 04: An early start to a great river day! The Kameng starts off with some easier rapids till the confluence of the Bichom River flowing in from the East. The river now winds its way away from civilization and the rapids keep coming as the river grows in volume. Overnight Camp.
Day 05: Today, we descend a fabulous jungle gorge with plenty of rapids. Aquifers from the sides add on water to the river and we camp at the end of the gorge of a big sand beach. Overnight Camp.
Day 06: Rest day to read, relax, swim, hike, explore. Overnight Camp.
Day 07: Today we run some of the biggest rapids the Kameng has to offer!! Big water, some scouts and a very good day on the water. Overnight Camp.
Day 08: Our last day on the water takes us into Bhlaukphong where the river emerges from the mountains. We now have Nameri National park on the right bank. Drive 52 kms to Tezpur. Overnight Hotel.
Day 09: Early morning transfer from Tezpur (180 kms) to Guhawati. Fly Delhi. Trip ends.
